Academics and Curriculum
The Incarnation School curriculum is based on the Essential Learning's of the Archdiocese of New York and the New York State Standards.

Language Arts
Teachers integrate language arts throughout the curricula and provide students with daily opportunities for reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  The Cooke Center for Reading and Development modeled our early elementary language arts program to provide continuity in how reading and writing are taught from kindergarten to third grade. Our reading program recognizes that when and how one learns to read is unique to each child and provides instruction varied enough to meet the needs of all children.  Many students benefit from additional individualized attention through Title I English as a Second Language and remedial reading programs.

The children are introduced to a variety of literary genres to help them develop their taste in reading and make judgments about the quality of the literature they read.  In addition to a newly refurbished and fully computerized library, the school employs a full-time library media specialist who helps the students choose books of all genres based on their interest and ability levels.

Mathematics
The aim of our mathematics program is to have students understand that the process of solving a problem is as important as the solution and that math is a valuable subject with applications in the real world. Math is integrated with the other subject areas on all grade levels.

Music
All Incarnation students participate in Music classes which instill an understanding of rhythm, melody and harmony and choral music. Each year the school celebrates a Christmas and spring show where classes perform for friends and families. The music teacher also instructs after-school piano classes.

Children in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten benefit from Kinderdance once a week, which is an innovative dance, gymnastics, and movement program specifically designed to enhance the developmental skills of this age group.  Third grade students participate in the Attic Salt Theater Program, which meets with a professional member of the Attic Salt Theater Company.  Students develop an appreciation for the theater and become active participants in the arts by writing and performing their own short plays.  Students also explore the arts by taking advantage of some of the many cultural opportunities in New York, including class trips to the New York City Opera, New York Philharmonic and the Paper Bag Players.

Social Studies
The social studies program moves from familiar to abstract social concepts and works to expand each child’s understanding of, and responsibility to, other people. Students study people and their culture with regard to concepts such as: interdependence, values, beliefs and technology. The social studies program employs multiple teaching strategies, including field trips, group and individual projects, presentation of teacher-selected materials, and lecture.

Science
The science program builds on the natural curiosity of children and helps the students expand their inquiring minds and environmental awareness. The New York Hall of Science has helped Incarnation model their science curriculum.

Using the scientific method, the students become involved in identifying and controlling variables in order to arrive at cause and effect conclusions. In addition, students are taught to evaluate data and to clearly assess results. Environmental issues are part of the science curriculum, as well as the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. Our aim is to stimulate divergent thinking and provide the students with a means to investigate their world based on what they know as well as what they discover.

Religion
The guidelines of the Archdiocese of New York determine the goals and objectives for catechetical instruction. Third through eighth grade take turns planning school masses, prayer services, and seasonal celebrations.  Teachers use a variety of instructional techniques, including Bible studies, plays, videos, role playing and discussion, to teach the essential skills. The parish priests are available for counseling, religious instruction and liturgical functions. Students are encouraged to take part in service projects, such as the Thanksgiving food drive, Trick or Treat for UNICEF, and fundraisers for worthy local organizations such as Fox House.

Technology
Computer instruction and use are a vital part of the Incarnation student’s education.  Students benefit from a computer lab with high-speed internet and a dedicated technology coach. There are also computers in the classrooms and wireless internet throughout the school.  With the help of a library media specialist, the faculty incorporates technology into all aspects of the curriculum.

Visual Arts
Incarnation participates in the Creative Classrooms Visual Arts Program, which currently provides over 40 inner-city parochial schools in Manhattan and the Bronx with a strong art curriculum.  At Incarnation, students of all grade levels express themselves through a variety of media, creating art that ranges from watercolor landscape to collages to clay sculpture.  The art program helps the students explore various expressions and communication styles, an experience that increases creativity and academic achievement.
